The ISP hosted the seminar “DEEP PURPLE: Conversion of biogas into ectoine for its use in cosmetics”, presented by the post-doctoral researcher Alessandro Carmona. The speech, framed in the internal seminar cycle of the institute, tackle the work done by the Environmental Technology Group of the ISP in this project funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework of the European Union.
Ectoine is an aminoacid implied in osmotic balance present in a wide number of halotolerant bacteria. This compound is used in medicine, cosmetology, dermatology and nutrition due to its ability to stabilize proteins and nucleic acids.
In the DEEP PURPLE project we aim at converting residual biogas into ectoine in high mass transfer bioreactors to obtain this compound with a lower market price.
