The Institute of Sustainable Processes (ISP) of the University of Valladolid (UVa) leads the European project Oils4my “Advanced microbial oil production for a sustainable circular economy: microalgae and oleaginous yeast consortium using low-cost carbon sources”, an initiative funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships (HORIZON-MSCA-2024-PF-01), aimed at advancing the development of biotechnological technologies for the sustainable production of microbial oils.
The project has received €209,914.56 in funding from the European Commission to drive research into innovative organic waste valorization processes within the framework of the circular economy.
Oils4my proposes an innovative strategy based on combining photosynthetic microorganisms and oleaginous yeasts to transform volatile fatty acids from anaerobic digestion waste streams into high-value microbial oils.
These bioproducts can be applied in sectors such as biofuels, green chemistry, and sustainable materials production, thereby contributing to reducing fossil fuel dependence and promoting the efficient use of organic waste.
The project is led by Dr. Marcela Levío-Raimán, recipient of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, and Dr. Cristina González-Fernández, Full Professor at UVa and researcher at the Institute of Sustainable Processes.
Additionally, Oils4my includes international collaborations through research stays at the University of Antwerp and the company Oleofat, as well as cooperation with the German research center Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Participation in this project reinforces the mission of UVa’s Institute of Sustainable Processes, which focuses on developing advanced technologies and tools for a sustainable, safe, and environmentally friendly industry, as well as its commitment to knowledge transfer to the productive sector.
