The ranking compiled by Stanford University and the publisher Elsevier places nine researchers from the Institute of Sustainable Processes amongst the top 2% of scientists worldwide in terms of impact within their respective fields, taking into account their entire scientific careers.
Eight researchers from the Institute of Sustainable Processes (ISP) at the University of Valladolid (UVa) are included, based on the cumulative scientific impact of their careers, in the ninth edition of the international ranking of the most cited researchers published by Stanford University and Elsevier. Of these, seven also feature in the ranking evaluating scientific impact during 2025.
Based on Scopus data, this study evaluates the impact of scientific research through standardized bibliometric indicators, such as the number of citations, h-index, hm-index (adjusted for co-authorship), and citations received by papers published as single, first, or last author. The ranking utilizes a composite score (c-score) to select the top 100,000 ranked researchers according to this metric, as well as those falling within the top 2% of their respective scientific subfields.
Eight researchers recognized for full-career scientific impact
The full-career ranking features Manuel Gómez Pallarés and Mario Martínez Martínez (both from the ISP’s FOODTECH Unit), Raúl Muñoz Torre, María Cristina González Fernández, and Roberto Castro Muñoz (from the ENVIROENG Unit), María Molinos Senante and Sergio Bordel Velasco (from the PROCESSES Unit), and Juan José Jiménez Sevilla (from the CHEMBIO Unit).
All eight rank within the top 2% of their respective scientific specialties according to the bibliometric indicators used by Stanford/Elsevier. This positioning reflects the cumulative impact of their publications and their contribution to scientific knowledge across various research areas.
Furthermore, Manuel Gómez Pallarés, Raúl Muñoz Torre, María Molinos Senante, and Roberto Castro-Muñoz are ranked among the top 100,000 researchers worldwide based on the composite score used in the study.
Seven researchers recognized for their 2025 impact
Out of the eight researchers, six also appear in the annual ranking corresponding to citations received during 2025: Manuel Gómez Pallarés, Raúl Muñoz Torre, María Molinos Senante, Mario Martínez Martínez, María Cristina González Fernández, and Roberto Castro-Muñoz. Furthermore, Octavio García-Depraect, from the ENVIROENG unit, is also included in this ranking, recognized for his significant impact during 2025.
Six of them fall within the top 1% of their respective specialties in this single-year classification, with five of them also featuring among the top 100,000 researchers globally based on their composite score.
These results highlight both the long-term scientific impact accumulated over their careers and the current relevance and reach of their publications within the international scientific community in key sustainability domains—such as environmental sciences, environmental engineering and biotechnology, analytical chemistry, food science and technology, and process and systems engineering.
The representation of researchers from various ISP disciplines in this ranking underscores the ISP’s commitment to research excellence and highlights the significant contribution of its researchers toward addressing global sustainability challenges through the integration of diverse scientific knowledge and approaches.
