Researchers from the ManuREfinery, Oils4my, PREILEAL, and Waste2Green projects brought science to the public in a well-attended and successful event.
The Institute for Sustainable Processes (ISP-UVa) participated once again in the European Researchers’ Night, held on September 25 at the School of Industrial Engineering (EII), to introduce the general public to advances in the circular economy, biotechnology, and biorefinery processes. This initiative is supported by the European Commission as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) under the Horizon Europe program.
During the event, researchers from the ISP-UVa led a series of educational workshops showcasing the scientific and technological developments from several of their projects linked to the units ENVIROENG y FOODTECH.
PREILEAL: a workshop focused on using cellulose produced by bacteria to create gels and films that mimic the natural structure of plants and fruits such as apples. Through touch and an interactive puzzle, participants compared these biomaterials with a real apple to discover how they are produced as part of this European Marie Curie project.
Waste2Green: Focused on harnessing nutrients from food industry wastewater through the combined action of microalgae and bacteria, this workshop allowed visitors to observe the microalgae under a microscope and learn how this project transforms that waste into biomass to produce biostimulants that promote plant growth.
Oils4my: An initiative to raise awareness about the development of microalgae and oil-producing yeast cultures for the production of microbial oils from low-cost carbon sources.
ManuREfinery: A workshop designed for children and dedicated to demonstrating how biorefinery technology can convert livestock effluents and manure into high-value-added fertilizers and animal feed.
Once again, the ISP-UVa’s participation in the European Researchers’ Night reaffirms the institute’s commitment to science communication, knowledge transfer, and bringing cutting-edge research closer to society.
